Sweden--Stockholm

Written on: Saturday August 7th, 2010

A journal entry from: Europe 2010

Our travels continued to Sweden but not before a 2 hour train ride at 5 am in the morning from Szczecin to Poznan in Poland, 3 hours of waiting at the airport, a 90 minute flight, all then to arrive in Stockholm and find out we werent at the main airport and that a bus there would still be 2 hours...

We were welcomed in Stockholm by my friend Madelaine, whom I met while travelling around Thailand 4 years ago. It is unbelievable how you can connect with someone years later after meeting them in another country, and can easily pick up right where you left off the last time you saw them.  Our first few days were spent with her, and our last few with Maria, whom I also met back in Thailand.  They have been great, showing us wonderful restaurants, small parks or beaches on the water, and other little places I am sure almost all tourists miss out on.

This city is one of my favourite cities I have ever been and is very aesthetically pleasing, built upon a series of 14 islands.  Nearly everywhere you go, you are near the water.  There are so many bridges connecting all these little islands in the city.  We spent countless hours in the old town, and visiting many cafes. Madelaine has a cousin named Oscar who has spent time with us as well, along with Andrew, a guy from Abbotsford who has come out with us a few times.

It is hard to believe that 6 days have gone by here.  Maja and I spent a day travelling an hour away to the very beautiful university town of Upsalla to catch up with a friend she knew, and he gave us an extraordinary afternoon tour of the finest sites in the city. Some other highlights were a day trip to Birka, the first town in Sweden, a 2 hour boat ride from Stockholm (And a viking one at that), drinks on the top floor of a lounge in the tallest building in the city, strolls around the fine gardens and amusement park areas, endless walks around magnificent cobblestone streets in the more local areas of town, and some wonderful barbeques on the cliffs, while watching the sunset from various points of the city.  Tomorrow morning, we have brunch with a few of us before heading to catch our flight to London, where our trip will slowly wind down to an end.
