Hustle & Bustle

A journal entry from: El Salvador

At some point between the reception and training last week it finally hit me. I am leaving in a little over three weeks and I don't know what to do with myself! The excitement is growing exponentially (and along with that, all the little anxieties, the nerves). I have about thirty-million things to do still, trip-related and academic and OH MY GOD I'm going to collapse into catatonic stupor just thinking about the next three weeks. I'm finally buying my plane ticket today. That's a start.

So, a bit about where I'm going and what I'm doing. I will be working with a fantastic organization called Centro de Intercambio y Solidaridad (CIS) located in San Salvador. My position description is as follows:

"The Fair Trade Salvadoran Crafts Intern will work with the coordinator of the CIS Solidarity crafts store in order to increase the sales and marketing capacity of the 15 cooperative workshops (working with indigo, wooden crafts, weaving, embroidery, dried flowers, pottery) with which we work. This work will involve visiting the workshops and preparing materials about each workshop for use in promotional brochures and on our online store, as well as working with the organization to strengthen our relationships with international fair-trade organizations. If time and expertise permits, the intern will also work on developing an inventory/catalogue system to ease the processing of international orders and sales from our local Salvadoran store."

Every time I read that (admitedly I have read over what I will be doing at least once a day since I got the position) I get all dreamy-eyed and swoony. Really, I can't wait. I'm terrified and overwhelmed and completely anxious about it all but I simply cannot wait!!!
