Tokyo day 8 - Roppongi

Written on: Tuesday January 26th, 2010

A journal entry from: Japan 2010

Today we were going to explore Roppongi, as we had a reservation to see a Japanese Beatles cover band, The Parrots, in Roppongi that night. In the morning, we checked out a temple (Zojo-ji) and the orange Tokyo Tower. Then, we caught a train to Meguro to see the free Meguro Parasitological Museum after lunch and another little temple (Daien-ji).

In the afternoon, we went to see the 2 big Roppongi shopping centre skyscapers: Tokyo Midtown and Roppongi Hills. Midtown was nice, but very fancy, and I felt out of place as a slightly scruffy tourist. Like, I felt underdressed even walking around its equivalent of Coles! Roppongi Hills was stupid, it was meant to be some "shopping centre of the future", but didn't seem to have that many shops, and was really confusing to navigate around.

For dinner, it was so cold outside that we ended up eating at a Japanese fast food place: MOS burger, just to get inside. Their burgers are like half the size of ours!

After dinner, it was time for the Beatles show at Abbey Road. On top of the cover charge, we had to buy at elast 2 drinks each, so I was drinking plum wine and sodas and had a parfait, which came with cornflakes! The band was awesome, it was almost scary how good they were at mimicing the real Beatles. They seemed to prefer the older songs, maybe because these were easier to perform live? It was cute to watch some of the people in the audience singing along, including an old Japanese granny sitting in the front row. Unfortunately, we had to skip the last set, as it was late and we didn't want to get locked out of our hotel. :( Next time, I want to see The Parrots' rivals, the band that plays at the Cavern Club!
