Grouse Mountain

A journal entry from: Vancouver, Canada 2009

The weather finally cleared up today, it was almost unpleasantly warm - the one day where I had something to do before the conference! I had arranged to meet up with another Australian brain injury researcher who lived in Vancouver. He gave me a tour of Vancouver General Hospital's emergency department. It looked almost exactly like the RBWH's but had more machines that go ping! He also shouted me lunch at a place that did really good sashimi. I'd never tasted sashimi like that before. It was so freshy and juicy it didn't even taste fishy!

At around 2 he had to get back to his work, so I was free to try to get up Grouse Mountain and see a grizzly bear.I caught the Skyride cable car up the mountain (instead of doing the Grouse Grind as I'd originally planned). Grouse Mountain was initially a bit disappointing, like a cheesy olden days themepark e.g. the lumberjack show. But it had fantastic views down to Vancouver and even probably as far as the US border. The lumberjackshow was very touristy, but I liked the show about birds of prey. I learnt that birds are called raptors if they grab their prey with their talons! And, I caught the chairlift further up the mountain (which was COLD!) to see even more of around Vancouver. Best of all, I saw the 2 grizzlies they have at the park (both rescued bears).

Finally, after going back down the mountain, I went looking for their wolf enclosure. The cable car operator said she could see wolves there as we were coming down, but the cable car was too packed for me to see. After looking around the enclosure for 5 minutes, I couldn't see anything that looked like a wolf. As I was going, I said to another guy "Well, I can't see anything... I'm going" And he replied "No, there's one!" It was all white! Since when are wolves white and fluffy-looking? Also, it was lying down sleeping, not very fearsome.
