and into . . . . . Malaysia - first let's see Malaka!

Written on: Monday April 28th, 2008

A journal entry from: Round the World in 172 days . . .

So we left Singapore after a non eventful visit and James seemed to be feeling brighter. We got to a pretty nice hotel in Malaka and had some lunch before heading into town to have a look around. I thought Malaka would be alot busier than it was and was kind of prepared for another big city, smog experience, but it couldn't have been more different - it was more of a town and was really quaint. I loved it! The first thing we saw of any significance was St Pauls Church, which is a leaning (Pisa tower style) church and a very pretty one at that, then we continued walking and found some fort ruins that were at the top of a hill. It was another sweaty walk to get to get to the top, but well worth it for the views and the ruins themself. Although I think what made it was the local guitarist playing inside - it was like something in a dream - or was that just because I was floating off in a dream world??

We got to Town Square, which was a pretty area of the town with lots of lovely buildings surrounding it and a picturesce waterfall in the centre. From here we took a trishaw tour, to see the locals guide of Malaka (a trishaw is basically a bike with a little carraige for two people to sit in whilst the rider peddles you around - kind of similar to a Tuk Tuk). Our guy was called Baby and was a bit of a cool dude compared to the others, with long hair and some wicked tattoos on his arms. En-route we stopped to see the oldest temple in Malaysia and to try some leaves that the guide wanted to show us and let us taste! One was pepper, one curry and the other cintrinella (we didn't taste that one!) The pepper one everyone else hatedm, but I quite liked it, then when he said it was pepper it all made sense as I'm obsessed with the stuff! We also tried a small fruit from a tree that one of the riders picked that was supposed to be an antibiotic and good for throats - James had a bad throat that day (he's not a hypo honest!) so I was making sure he tried this one, and low and behold it did help a bit! Out heer they only use leaves and berries etc for their ailments and I guarantee their alot healthier than us!

This evening we had dinner at a food court, but unfortunately it was very average!! Afterwards we did a bit of shopping as I had to pick up some t.shirts to cover myself up when we visit mosques and temples etc, out of respect for the muslim culture. This was the only night we had in Malaka so it was a shame, but I think we covered almost everything!

Great place for a quick stop if you're heading to Malaysia!

Howdy,I'd love to have a ride in one of those, can't you ship one home? Those leaves you ate sound a bit like our mint, of which there are various flavours, as you no doubt know. Hope you popped a few of the anti-biotic ones in your pocket James. Have you found many places on this trip where what you wear is important? Speak to you soon, Love to you both XX
