Singapore - Cafe del Mar and The Luge!

Written on: Friday April 25th, 2008

A journal entry from: Round the World in 172 days . . .

We got to Singapore late afternoon, so after an enjoyable cab ride from the airport with a particularly friendly and chatty driver we chilled for a bit and then headed to the nearest food court for dinner (I know food court, sounds luxurious doesn't it! It's the best bet for a good meal at good value though, well that's what everyone says!) We had an awesome curry, naan and rice for about 2 pounds each. Our hotel (The Perak) is in Little India so a curry was a must! The food court was packed with locals and the odd tourist, it was Friday night so I think everyone comes here for a few beers and food before the weekend, actually at 2 quid a head you'd be mad not to eat here every night!

The next day we had a list of things we wanted to do, so we got up and took the MRT (underground system) to Sentosa Island, where we spent most of the time chilling outside Cafe Del Mar on the double bed sun loungers by the best man made beach I've ever seen - it was nice to be in a little bit of paradise - I've missed the beach! The only other thing we ended up doing was take the chairlift to a high point on the Island and then had two Luge rides back down. This is basically a little go cart that you sit in and tear down the hills using the handles as the accelarator and brake - great fun for all ages!!

The reason this is all we did is poor James is still ill and needed to spend time in bed sleeping to get over it before we met up with the new group . . .  .

The last night we met the group - 12 people (9 of whom are from the UK!, 2 NZ and 1 Ozzie) and the leader (an Ozzie from Randwick, near Coogee!). We all went for dinner together to the Banana Leaf Apollo, where we ate curries off of banana leaves - it was great fun and really tasty! The group all seem nice, typically polite for our first get together so looking forward to seeing everyones real personalities in the next few days. This trip is a bit more full on and we spend more time with thr group than the last one, so hopefully everyone will be cool. They are generally a younger bunch, with us probably one of the oldest. Not sure if this is a good thing or not, we can feel old, or pretend to be young I guess!!

Singapore is a great place and although we didn't get to see much it's such an easy place to stop over when you're coming in this direction or to Oz etc so we know we'll back to explore properly another time!

Could do with a food court here on a Friday night at £2 a head! Apart from the beach I expect its good to see the sky again without the smog! XXX

Hi Lovely people.Thank you for the post card.Stunning photo.I cant believe you kyacked (cant spell that,so thats my version !)here. That alone would do me for the year.Wow.James my mum said she thought you may have had too much spicy food.I beg to differ !.In my experiences(and ive had a few).If the prescribed medication didnt work.I would find and eat the hottest curry available, washed down with a few large brandys. It normally kicked the s*** out of any bug.Excuse the pun !.Truck business all done and dusted. It would be nice to chat with you again,if you are near a land line before Bankok.Beautiful shadow kissing photo. The only females that approach me these days,i would only want to kiss in the shadows.Ha ha,only joking !.Anyway, good luck with the hot curry and brandy James.Keep doing what your doing.Love you lots.Pops XX
