Port Hedland - Thankfully we only had one night here!!

Written on: Thursday March 20th, 2008

A journal entry from: Round the World in 172 days . . .

Firstly, huge congratulations to Giz and Crissie!! When's the baby due? We're really happy for you both!! x

Ok when we left Coral Bay we were ultimately heading up to Broome, but it would have been a really long bus journey, so we decided to make a stop after about 12 hours for a night at a place called Port Hedland. After we'd booked the bus ticket we discovered how little there was to do here as it's just a small mining town and it turned out there wasn't even a hostel, so we booked into a hotel for $175. This is probably as much as we paid for the hotel in The Rocks, Sydney which was really good so we thought atleast we can have a good chillout, some room service and a nice bed before we set off for Broome the next day. If only!!!

We arrived in Port Hedland and it was quieter than Geraldton, plus it was alot smaller and once again not much was open. We asked directions to the hotel and as we got closer, I think we both had the same thought of, 'Can't we just go and jump back on the bus?', but it was too late we were stuck here for 24 hours! We checked in, in what seemed more like a broom cupboard, than a reception and were then pointed into the direction of our motel style room! For one it hadn't been cleaned yet, but aside from that this is far from the $175 room we were imagining! Breeze block walls, boarded up window, very basic en-suite. We did have a small TV and the England v New Zealand Test Cricket was on, so something to keep us occupied through the evening.

As the room wasn't ready, we braved the hotel bar for a quick drink whilst we were waiting. This was an experience in itself, as the outdoor bar was full of tramp Aboriginis, who were steaming drunk (bare in mind it's only 11.30am!!), shouting and generally causing havoc! At one point one of the guys came shouting up to the bar, afetr a bucket of water as one of them had been sick on the floor! Nice!! You guessed it, we didn't stay for another drink and didn't plan an evening of a few beers at this bar! ;-)

This is pretty much it for Port Hedland. We had to get food at the hotel bar as there was nothing else in town, but luckily by this time the Aboriginis that were there earlier had obviously run out of money and left, so it was a little safer than before!

We were pretty glad to leave the next morning and were all smiles as it was looking good for England in the Cricket, which makes a change! Bring on Broome!

Oh poor you two, what a place to have to stay. Good job those 'rebel rousers' didn't come near your room! I think you would have gone up the wall before morning, had there been no TV. Hope you didn't have to share your room with any uninvited guests! (crawley ones that is) Roll on Broome, hope it makes up for last night. Lots of Love XX
