Dunedin - Oamaru - Timaru

Written on: Thursday February 7th, 2008

A journal entry from: Round the World in 172 days . . .

When we left Dunedin we didn't know where we were going to stay that night, which was kind of exciting! We stopped in a town called Oamaru first, which was an option but it was too early to stop really and we could make good ground if we carried on. This place looked interesting though so we stopped and walked round for a few hours. It was a really historical place with loads of old buildings and even the odd person dressed up in Victorian style clothing - random, but good effort! We looked round a quirky art gallery and I took some photos of the artwork, mainly sculptures of the same kind of face, but each with a slightly different expression - it was cool!

After here we drove on and continued to head North, as we were on the East Coast again now. We arrived at Timaru at about 3pm and decided to stay here. The city seemed nice, kind of like a small, less built up Auckland and it's right beside the coast. Our campsite was about 1km from the sea so we decided to walk down and see if it was worth a swim. When we got there though the tide was right in, crashing against the rocks - so not really an option. We walked round in a bit of a daze, as were both knackered from travelling. I cooked up a delicious plate of garlic, onion and sausage omelette with some chilli baked beans to give us some energy, which we washed down with a couple of beers and then played cards for a few hours - well until James won overall - this could have gone on alot longer!! ;-)

Your journals are great, I feel as though I am there with you...I wish! What a pity your battery went on your camera while on the glacier, not a place you'd go to every day is it? What's the most unexpected thing you've come across so far? Well done Gill for sending long distant cure for travel sickness, very clever. Can't wait for your next episode. Look after yourselves and have fun. Lots of Love XX

Happy Birthday for Monday Kaori, this will be one to remember. NZ sounds amazing and everywhere you go so different. A little tip re batteries they drain much more quickly in the cold so if in that situation again try and warm them up, you might just get a couple more shots. You both sound really chilled (must be those daily beers). I'm guessing camper vans are a bit costly on the juice then? Lots of love to you both. xxxxxxxx
