Wanaka to Queenstown - do we have to leave??

Written on: Thursday February 7th, 2008

A journal entry from: Round the World in 172 days . . .

When we left the Wanaka campsite we stopped before we left the town at a place called Puzzle World, but as there had been a power cut we missed out on the illusion rooms and just paid to try the maze! I've always wanted to do a maze and we were both a bit like excited kids before we did it, then after about 15 minutes boredom set in as we thought we were far too intelligent and it was going to be kids stuff! After half an hour we'd completed half of our mission (found 2 of the 4 towers at each corner of the maze), but then things changed and it got really hard! This maze went from a bit of fun to serious stuff! We're both quite competitive and although showing signs that we'd had enough we weren't ready to give up! This was now a serious battle and luckily for us and the people around us we managed to do it after about an hour! Phew!!

After this we headed straight to Queenstown - a shorter but just as beautiful drive as the days before! We checked into a conveniently located campsite, about ten minutes walk from town and as the sun was beating down, we slapped on some cream and basked in it for few hours whilst reading. This was a lovely relaxing day and by about 6 we got ready to go and treat ourselves to dinner out! We had a few beers before we left and as we were sitting by the van the couple  (Heather and Eddie) who were parked beside us in Wanaka, the night before, pulled up and once again had been allocated the site next to us! What a coincidence! They had a beer with us and then Heather cracked open a bottle of sparkling wine, which James and I shared with her. We ended up all going out for dinner together and by this time James and I were starving! James, however got a rough deal with his dinner! I order Lamb Shank, Heather the Flintstone Steak, Eddie the Lamb cutlets and James Pork. What he hadn't realised was the pork was sausages and he only got 2!! This was more than dissapointing for him and as a result after a few beers byb the harbour we left Heather and Eddie to go back to the campsite and grabbed a pizza from a take away! This did the job for James and I even had a few slices!! Pig, I know! Heather and Eddie were a lovely couple, from Brighton, and we've got their number so may catch up with them when we're in Oz.

The following day we had in Queenstown too as we'd booked in for 2 nights, so we wondered around the town. It's the size of a small town, with the atmosphere of a buzzing city / seaside town! We absolutely loved it here!! We laid on a park in town, right by the lake / harbour and played cards, ate ice creams and chilled! Then we walked for a few hours round a park and attempted to take a dip in the lake, which seemed like more of a tiny bay, by the time we'd scrambled down the bank and positioned ourselves on some rocks by the water. The lake was not as warm as we'd imagined though, so we literraly got wet and got out - lying on a rock to dry out! The second night we cooked for ourselves and didn't go out, just incase we were lured into another evil take away! ;-)

The next morning, we were both sad to leave Queenstown and would love to have stayed here for a few weeks really - maybe next time . . . . . !!
