Monkey Temple

Written on: Tuesday June 19th, 2007

A journal entry from: Elective 2007!!

After our morning at Kanti, we headed slightly out of Kathmandu to visit Swayambhunath (or the monkey temple as its known here, its quite famous as well!) Its a big Buddhist temple on a hill, so we climbed up and got a great view of Kathmandu. The 'stupa' is the best thing there- a big gold square on a dome with the watchful eyes of the Buddha looking out from each side! Above the two eyes is a third eye that apparently symbolises the Buddha's insight (i have a couple of crap photos of it!) Oh yeah, and there are loads of monkeys just mincing around the temple - as the name probably suggests:)
