Darwin-Kakadu, Katherine Gorge and Litchfield

Written on: Thursday September 25th, 2008

A journal entry from: Australia

We arrived into darwin and the wave of heat struck both of us immediately. You know when you come through a door and you feel a rush of hot air. Well that was what it was like stepping out of Darwin airport expect it wasn't just a blast of air, that is actually how hot it is all the time!! All we could do it drink piles of water and try to walk in the shadows as much as possible! We only had the one night in a hostel before getting up early the next morning to start our tour. We set off the next morning on our 5 day tour, 3 days in Kakadu, one day at Katherine Gorge and 1 day at Litchfield. Our days consisted of short hikes (can't walk too long in this heat) and lots of swimming at absolutely beautiful, remote pools. They was alot of driving as well so we got to see heaps of the bush (and lots of road kill-poor Skippy!) We camped out every night, first night in a tent, then we slept in swags, it was so hot so it was nicer not to be in a tent. Every night we had dinner cooked for us over the camp fire. We tasted water buffalo burgers and kangaroo stir-fry-both were gorgeous! Oh and Sile also ate an ant which was surprising tasty!

So we're back in Darwin now, Kev with a sunburned back (he was a tourist attraction for the last few days- reddest back in Oz!) and Sile with heaps of insect bites but it was well worth it!!

Off to Broome next :)
