Lake Takepo

Written on: Sunday June 22nd, 2008

A journal entry from: New Zealand

Lake Takepo is a really scerene place with an excellent view of the glacier lake and the surrounding Southern Alps mountains. We didnt do any activities the first day because it was kind of late when we arrived so we just took it easy and played some exciting scrabble!! The next day we went on an awesome day hike up to Mt John's summit overlooking the glacier Lake Takepo. That was one of the highlights of our trip as the views were amazing!!

It snowed the night before so we were walking on really fresh crisp snow and the southern Alps looked great throughout the day with their snow peaked tips. We reached the summit and passed by the observertory on our decent back to the lake where we decided to go for a swim. That was a really stupid idea, but somehow the prospect of swimming in a freezing cold glacier lake was just too good an oportunity to pass up so we hopped in for a quick swim :) We dont regret it at all but it was ridiculously cold. Then back to the hostel for a hot shower, good meal and more scrabble where I managed to beat Sile :)
