A journal entry from: New Zealand
Queenstown (aka party central of new zealand) is a really nice spot situated beside a big lake on the base of a few mountains. Its very popular for its ski and snow boarding activities too not to mention a whole range of other stuff on offer.
Paragliding
Today we went paragliding!! That was absoluely brilliant and its something I always wanted to try out. We started on the top of one of the mountains and geared up, getting strapped into the equipment and attached to the parashute etc...It was on the ground behind us while we waited for a breeze to come before running into the breeze as hard as you can to fill the shoot up with air to lift us off the ground. It was very unnerving running as fast as you can towards a cliff edge!! and then when you run out of ground you have to put all your trust into the shoot attached, very strange feeling but well worth it :)
Sile was close on my heals and from time to time I could see her soaring above me depending on which wind direction we veered into. The experience was just amazing and lasted for about five minutes each time. When we touched down we hoped back into the van which brought us to the top for another go, this time it was a little more active and we did some spiraling which was stomach wrenching but a great thrill all the same.
Nevis Bungy Jump
This was one of the most gut wrenching and nerve wrecking experiences I have ever had. The bungy itself is 134 metres above ground and when you step onto the platform all I remember thinking is what a huge mistake it was but I sucked it up and jumped off the ledge. It was absolutely awesome the freefall was really exhillirating and when the cord snapped back the rush felt sureal...it was as if all my organs were trying to make their way to my head, I know that sounds stupid but the experience was unforgetable.
Horse Riding
We went horse riding on the outskirts of queenstown on a tour called The Ride Of The Rings. We saddled up and went through a load of the scenes from the LOTR movies. Including Isengard, the Wood of Lothlorien, The wood where Boromir died, Fanghorn Forest, The peaks where the lighting of the fires was set and the lookout of Amun Hen. My horse was called Borris and Sile's horse was called Sam. Out of the 10 people on the tour Sile's horse, Sam, was the only one that was actulay in the LOTR movies. Sam was in the Final battle scene in ROTK and also at the Roharems gathering of arms.
My horse was a bit stubborn and had to be told who was in charge from time to time and after a rocky start we got into a good flow. Sile handled her horse pretty well except for one time when Sam took off into a canter by himself but Sile managed to settle him down and then we got back on track. The tour itself was about 2 hours long and the scenery and behind the scenes information about LOTR was fantastic.
Pub Crawl
After Kev doing the Nevis and my horse bolting we needed a few drinks so we did the organised pub crawl of Queenstown. Free drink in evry bar and loads of discounts- you can't go wrong! The last pub we went to did teapot cocktails. Very random! Check out the pics to see!
