A journal entry from: New Zealand
Wanaka is a very nice small town beside a big lake. We got in there late in the afternoon and were still fairly tired from the hike on the glacier the previous day so we decided to go to the cinema - which is one of the local attractions. Its actually a cinema / restaurant and has a real laid back feel to it. The choice of seats in the cinema range from normal cinema chairs to cars (yes an actual car in the cinema), lazy boy recliner seats and tonnes of sofa's. It was really comfortable. We seen Street Kings, I thought it was a decent movie but Sile didn't!
The next day we went for a 22km walk of the lake and hiked up one of the local mountains - Mt. Iron. That was a nice long walk and we got to see alot of great views along the lake side. Also as we approached Mt Iron we got to see some good panarmic view of Wanaka.
After the long days walk we went out to the pubs for some well deserved drinks. We managed to catch the New Zealand - England rugby match in one of the pubs and then Sile got us some primo seats in a make shift stand inside one of the pubs in front of the big screen for the Ireland - Oz rugby match. There were loads of Irish around but the atmosphere wasnt the best or maybe we were just too knackered after the 22 km walk to fully enjoy it...Then again it could also be the fact that Ireland lost again...
The following morning we went to Puzzle World just on the outskirts of Wanaka town. This is a really fun place to go. It has tonnes of everyday puzzles to do just on the inside of the door and then when you get into the rest of the buidling there are loads of astonishing visual and perceptual illusions. One room in particular was constructed at an angle and all the furniture in it was possitioned in such a way that it appears as if its going upwards but in reality their position at a downward angle. Its really hard to describe. Imagine putting a ball on a pool table and expecting it to roll toward, you on the apparent downward angle, but instead it rolls away from you on the actual downward angle...very weird.
The best thing about Puzzleworld is the adult sized maze that can take up to 1hr 30 mins to complete. We were running around it for ages to try and complete one of the assigned tasks (find all four corners) that was great fun :)
