Salta

A journal entry from: Argentina

We arrived intro Salta at around 10.30pm after an 11 hour bus journey with no local currency and no hostel booked. On top of that the ATMs were all out of cash. Luckily we bumped into an Irish lad who was familiar with the area and brought us to a deadly hostel called Inti Wasi.

We were only gonna hang around for a few days but decided to extend the stay because of their legend portions serverd at their bi-weekly barbeques!! You literally eat as much as you want for hours (Pure steak...tonnes of it) and as much wine as you can drink. Legend of a place. Needless to say we kept eating for as long as we could and I made sure the Irish reputation as big drinkers was upheld. Everytime they came around with jugs of wine they just laughed and shouted ah irlanda, irlanda and filled my cup up to the top. Went down well with the huge sized portions of steak!

Salta is a pretty nice city, their main square is surrounded with fruit trees, oranges I think and the locals just let them grow naturally, fruit and all. I cant imaging any fruit bearing trees being left olone on O Connel street. Id say we would destroy the trees at night after a session and pick all the fruit.

We took a day trip to a whte water river for rafting on a grade 3 (more like grade 2) rapid. That was class because we never did it before and once or twice I thought the boat was gonna capsize, brilliant crack! After that we had another barbeque with the Salta Rafting company. Something to keep the energy up before going on a few zip lines 160 metres above the ground and 500 metres wide (above a valley floor). At the top of the hill it was really adunting to look down when you were bwing strapped in. It was exactly like the begining scene from Cliffhanger.....The first line was really steep and really fast and took about a minute to get across. On the second line Sile got stalled half way across the line suspended 160 metres off the ground above the velley, no messing chack out the photos. One of the guys had to shimmy his way out to her and drag her back to safety!! Brilliant day overall, IŽd definately recommend it.

We climbed the local hill in Salta that has sections marked as you go up the hill in the stations of the cross. At the top there was a deadly view of the city and a cable car down to the bottom which was our lazy option after climbing 1200 steps, that night we watch the liverpool chelsea match and had another bbq. Needless to say we stuffed ourselves one last time time before leaving for Mendoza on an 18 hour bus journey the following day.

Are there no drink driving laws over there?
