A journal entry from: Boliva
We reluctantly decided to do the worlds most dangerous road called "The Death Road". Its a 64 km cycle - most of it down hill and you travelll at ridiculous speeds. Prior to 2003-4 there were a few hundred deaths on this road every year since it opened in the 1940s. There are different corners of it maked by the deaths of various individuals and buses that fell over the edge. Most of the road itself hugs the cliff face with drops upto 600 metres on the edge. At times the road is no more than 3.8 metres in width. Unfortunately a group of cyclists not 10 mins ahead of us experienced a death in their group. One poor girl fell of the cliff face and died. We just cycled past the scene and kept going but at a more cautious pace (which was still ridiculously fast) Its soo steep and there are soo many stones, gravel and potholes, mudslides, rivers (and waterfalls) that the best way to cycle it is by going fast. Sile does´t agree and found the best way was holding on tight and staying last so not going as fast as everyone else! Thankfully everyone in our group made it to the end in one pieceand alive. I can honestly say that it was one of the most exhillerating things ive ever done. After learning of where the road got its name first hand Id advise that anone who waants to do this should find the best tour company to go with the best equipment, take it easy and be very very careful!! Also be midful that your bum will be very sore the next day!-Sile.
