Mountains and Glaciers

Written on: Monday May 7th, 2007

G-DAY FOLKS.  GLAD TO SEE SO MANY RESPONSES TO OUR BLOG. DOES THAT MEAN YOU DO MISS US??

TO CONTINUE ON?. WE DID GO FOR A WALK (YES SCOTT TOO) TO THE FRANZ JOSEF AND THE FOX GLACIERS. WE IGNORED THE SIGN THAT SAID ?ONLY EXPERIENCED PEOPLE BEYOND THIS POINT?.  WELL BEING THAT WE ARE EXPERIENCED CLIMBERS LIVING IN MT CARMEL (GET IT MT.) WE WALKED UP TO THE FACE OF THE GLACIER AND TOUCHED IT. IT WAS PRETTY COOL, AND NOT JUST THE TEMPERATURE.

NEXT DAY WE TRAVELLED THROUGH THE HAAST PASS IN ORDER TO GET  THROUGH TO SOUTHERN ALPS AND PASSED BY LAKE WANAKA WHERE SHANIA TWAIN HAS PROPERTY,  HOWEVER WE DIDN?T HAVE TIME TO DROP IN FOR TEA, MAYBE NEXT TIME.

WE THEN VENTURED OFF TO MT. COOK, THE HIGHEST MT. IN NZ (3755M) AND NO WE DID NOT WALK THIS TIME . INSTEAD WE  TOOK A FLIGHT (PILATUS PORTER AIRCRAFT) OVER THE MOUNTAIN  AND .OVER THE GLACIERS WE SAW A FEW DAYS PRIOR BUT THIS TIME WE SAW THE TOP OF THEM AND LANDED ON THE FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER AT 7300 FT. IT WAS SPECTACULAR AND I?M GLAD I DIDN?T WEAR MY SANDALS. SCOTT EVEN THREW A SNOWBALL AT ME.

WE THEN CONTINUED ON AND DECIDED TO TAKE OUR RENTAL CAR THE MITSUBISHI ON A GOOD TEST RUN AND TOOK HER WHERE PROBABLY FEW RENTALS CARS HAVE GONE BEFORE. UP TO MT. HUTT. THIS 14 KM RUN (WHICH WE THOUGHT WAS JUST A LITTLE SIDE TRIP) TOOK 45 MIN. UP CLIFF EDGES. PAST SWITCH BACKS AND HAIRPIN TURNS ON A ROUGH AND AT TIMES MUDDY GRAVEL ROAD. HERE FOR SOME REASON THEY DON?T BELIEVE IN GUARD RAILS  AND THE VIEW STRAIGHT DOWN WAS AT TIMES WONDERFUL AND  SHALL WE SAY  AT TIMES HAIRRAISING. THIS IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST SKI AREA IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE.  WHEN WE FINALLY REACHED THE TOP OF THE SNOW LINE  WE WERE ONLY 2 KM FROM THE TOP AND COULDN?T CONTINUE ON BECAUSE THE ROAD WORKER WAS CLOSING THE GATE TO THE PEAK.  WAAAA!

WE THEN DECIDED TO PUT THE CAR THROUGH ANOTHER TEST RUN. AND YOU KNOW WHAT.. THE BRAKES STILL WORK. HOWEVER THE OIL PAN MAY HAVE A FEW DINGS FROM THE ROCKS WE WERE THROWING  UP.

I THINK MITSUBISHI SHOULD HIRE US IN THERE  R&D DEPT.

Since you didn't receive a comment on this one, I thought I'd add one so that you didn't feel like losers. Wait a minute, you guys are in Australia and we're not. I guess we're the losers working our asses off while you guys are driving around. Hmmmmmm .......... Hope you're having fun, fun, fun. Oh, by the way Paul thanks you profusely, Gaby, for not calling him first re: our anniversary. However, I'm getting a dinner at Eddingtons out of it so I do thankyou for calling me first. Just to let you know, I did make reservations for three. Guess who's coming to dinner. Yep...we take our responsibilities seriously. Unless, Kristyn was lying, she said that you guys invite her when it's your annivesary.........Keep us posted............
