Day 3: Workum to Zwartluis - 94 km

Written on: Monday June 21st, 2010

A journal entry from: Tour de Holland

We woke this morning to a clear blue, sunny day. Our host, Martin, supplied an exceptional breakfast and once we were well fed, we were on our way. At this point Curtis was desperately searching for a bike shop. Having delaminated the rubber from one part of his tire due to breaking too hard yesterday (to avoid me) it was only a matter of time before the tire would cause him grief. It was already costing him a few rounds of beer.

Around lunch we arrived at Lemmer and met with Ron and Rene and found a bike shop. Curtis replaced his tires and we continued on through beautiful farm fields before reaching de Weeriben National Park. It is a big wetland area full of canals with narrow bike paths alongside the water. There are no other roads and most people access their vacation 'homes' by boat. Riding was easy for the most part and we found ourselves riding shoulder to shoulder in conversation.

Late in the afternoon we arrived in Zwartsluis, near Staphorst and found the farm that we were staying at. The farmer was very engaged in his dairy cows and took us into the milking stall to milk the cows. Everyone at the farm was friendly and we spent a very relaxed afternoon drinking beer, and riding around on the pedal go karts. We had a huge meal of pankakes with all products derived from the farm. The dining room overlooked the barn, adding a unique viewing opportunity to our feast.
