The gist, the plan

A journal entry from: Adriatic to Amsterdam

After two years of slaving away in government's* Soviet-style rat warren cubicle maze, with filtered air and artificial lights, I am once again leaving the continent. This time I am headed with my partner-in-crime, Tamsin, to soak up the sun and sights of the Adriatic Coast, to head to the high hills in the Julian Alps, Slovenia and then to explore the 'City of a Hundred Spires', Prague. I'll then leave central Bohemia for Amsterdam to meet Johnny Boy, Joel, Curtis, Derek, Kyle, Ron and Rene to cycle around the Netherlands. This part of the trip is dedicated to Opa van der Marel as it roughly retraces his post-war rediscovery of Holland on a bicycle after Nazi occupation over 50 years ago. Here is the plan:

June 3rd - packed up ready to go, leave the office and head to Prince George, BC. Stow Tamsin's car at a friend's and overnight.

June 4th - early morning shuttle to catch flight to Vancouver. Drag boxed road bike and gear on Skytrain to meet Tamsin's dad and transfer it to Joel's appartment - so he can deal with it (thanks brah!). Return to airport by 14:00 to catch flight to London. No hitches please.

June 5th - arrive in London and risk an outside adventure during layover - Stonehenge?? - make it back to airport by 15:50 for flight to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Arrive in Dubrovnik and find our reserved gasthaus

June 6th - from this point on we have no booked travels, accom or activities. The general idea is to travel up the coast of Croatia to several islands in the Adriatic Sea. Somewhere around June 10/11 we will head to Zagreb and then Ljubljana and head to the Julian Alps in Slovenia.

June 16th - catch a night train from Ljubljana to Prague.

June 17/18th - explore Prague's charm . . .

June 19th - arrive by train in Amsterdam to meet the cycling crew. Kyle has delineated our route on this map: http://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&vps=2&jsv=225b&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Heerenveen,+Friesland,+The+Netherlands&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=111093526696197085563.0004843b68a332b36cde9

June 30th - fly with Icelandair (volcanoes permitting) via Reykjavic to meet Tamsin in Toronto. Long weekend in Ontario - see you all there!

*Just kidding. For those that don't know, I've spent the last 2 years living in Bella Coola, Nelson and Smithers BC working as a conservation specialist for the Ministry of Environment. My work has taken me from rare patches of ancient temperate rainforest to rugged mountaintops. This unique work experience is unfortunately drawing to a close and a new chapter is being celebrated by a quick trip to eastern Europe.
