Day 20: Goodbye Gold Coast

Written on: Saturday April 9th, 2011

A journal entry from: Down Under Surf Safari

Our last full day in Australia. We decided to have on last blow out surf day at Byron Bay so we packed up all the boards (8) and left again at 5 am. We had a gorgeous day; sunny, +28, and with good surf. We did part of the Watego's program: surf + Twisted Sista coffee + surf and then we headed back up the coast to sell our boards back to Miami Boardroom. In retrospect this was one of the best decisions we ever made since we ended up paying $100 for each of the boards we bought and didn't have to deal with renting new boards everywhere. Hung out at the Simms a bit in the evening and then Jova desperately wanted to go out and party on our last night. So we headed into Surfer's Paradise and ended up driving (I was designated) home at 3 or 4 am. The next morning was early departure to Brisbane to catch our flights back home.

As is always the case, ending an amazing trip always brings about feelings of sadness. Part of it is knowing that those good times, the sun and surf, are over but more than that, this snapshot in time can never be reproduced with the same people, events, moments and therefore they must remain as memories. There are a lot of good memories from this trip and I would say that each of us changed a little bit once more, transformed by the three weeks we spent surfing in the land down under.

Here is a list of top tens for Australia:

BEST:

  1. surf
  2. cane toad racing
  3. domestic flights
  4. surfer girls
  5. the Great Barrier Reef
  6. outdoor showers
  7. feeding wallabies
  8. traffic circles
  9. Honey Crunch cereal (same as Honey Nut Corn Flakes)
  10. bare feet

WORST:

  1. Australian radio
  2. Bogan (redneck) haircuts ie. extreme mullets
  3. Australian expressions (except 'too easy')
  4. Car-truck Utes
  5. the price of coffee
  6. racists
  7. tatoos ie. sleeves
  8. oversized road signs that make no sense
  9. air conditioning everywhere with open doors
  10. when there's no surf
