Binge Tubing

A journal entry from: See you next year!

Almost every backpacker who goes to Laos has the little town of Vang Vieng on its itinerary. The town itself is set in some beautiful karst scenery and chock-a-block with bars, restaurants and every other tourist facility you can imagine. A kind of schizophrenic reality if you ask me and not completely to my liking.

Long before we went to Vang Vieng we had heard of it and its reputation as tubing capital of Asia, or perhaps the world. For those not familiar with tubing: it's a sport where you need to be highly skilled in the art of lying on/in a big innertube while floating down a river. If this sounds complicated, in Vang Vieng you have the added difficulty of a high bar and obstacle density along the route. And because of this, a lot of people spend sometimes up to 4 or 5 days in a row trying to improve themselves in this extraordinary sport.

At least, that's one way of explaining it. The other is that you get on a tube and get really drunk while stopping at all the bars along the route and making use of their swing ropes to jump in the water. And except for using the swing ropes , that's what we did. But because we were really good at it, we only needed one day to master this skill.
