Back to Old San Juan

A journal entry from: Puerto Rico, FEB08

Today we say goodbye to Vieques and head back to OSJ.  We took the late ferry back to the main island and caught a taxi to town.  Prior research helped speed up our quest for a room, and we checked into the slightly shabby albeit very reasonably-priced Castro Guest House.  The location itself was well worth staying here, as we were able to walk to everything we wanted to see.  This included our first attraction, the Castillo de San Cristobal.  This is the former Spanish fotress built in 1783.  It is massive, beautiful and worth a visit.  We were fortunate to come across a band playing in the main square of the fortress!

During the evening we bar/restaurant hopped the streets of OSJ.  What a pleasant surprise this turned out to be!  There are many hip, vibrant clubs along the main strip.  Unfortunately, they exist off the money spent by the overflowing cruise ship tourists that flock the streets every day.  But if you can handle the probable crowds, it is worth your while to spend an evening out in OSJ.  I definitely recommend stopping by Dragonfly, an Asain influenced restaurant with outstanding sushi and unusual decor.

We made the most of our last night in Puerto Rico, and crashed hard back at the Castro.
