New Zealand - Mount John and Lake Tekapo (turquoise this time)

Written on: Thursday July 9th, 2009

It was necessary to pass back through Tekapo on our way back down south. The snow had begun to melt clearing the way for our journey down to Oamaru.

We stopped for a quick return to where we had stayed before to see the difference in the lake (although the reflection of the sky makes it blue, it has a really turquoise hue because of the finely ground rock suspended in the glacial melted waters).

We summitted Mount John (with huge difficulty as the path had become one big ice slide) to reach an amazing view over the lakes. What should have been an hour round walk took us around three hours. There is an observatory atop. New Zealand is one of the best places in the world to view the night sky.
