New Zealand - Mount Dobson (skiing in order to freeze again)

Written on: Wednesday July 8th, 2009

Since Katrina and Paul were working up the mountain, we thought we'd go and see them, and try out a bit of skiing.

It is the cheapest skiing in New Zealand, and the complex consists of a few very basic huts, one for equipment, one for hot drinks and snacks, and an office. This made for a lovely down to earth first ski experience. We both really enjoyed ourselves, possibly Jon more so, since he was the one with the camera most of the day!

The drive back down was a little hairy, as the road was essentially a very long ice rink, but the minibus driver has been doing it almost every day for over 20 years, and we had the snowchains on. Others didn't have the experience or the snowchains and suffered the consequence - having to await their rescue from the snow drifts etc.
