Cambodia - Siem Reap (Angkor temples)

Written on: Saturday April 18th, 2009

Siem Reap is a town which essentially caters for tourists who are visiting the surrounding temples of Angkor Wat. But it's a nice town anyway with loads to do in the evening and plenty of cheap eating options. But the main draw is Angkor Wat. And Angkor Wat is amazing.

Built by the Khmer empire between the 10th and 15th Centuries it has to be one of the most amazing things anyone has ever seen. The fact that it was left undiscovered to the outside world for hundreds of years before a French archaologist found it in the 1970s means that it is now not just a man-made wonder, but also a natural one. Nature has weaved it's way in and out of the buildings to create something you can only dream about. So far if I had to recommend one thing from the trip, Angkor Wat would be it. Careful thought to restoration keeps it feeling magical, as some parts have been left as they were found, some have been party renovated to allow access, and others have been completely restored so you can see how it was originally.

In Siem Reap we saw our top score of people on a moped. Six.

(Angkor Voyage Villa - not recommended, brown stinky water from iron, lazy staff)
(Golden Temple Villa - highly recommended)
