Arequipa, Day 1

Written on: Thursday August 23rd, 2007

A journal entry from: Bolivia, Peru, and the Galapagos!

(NOTE: Click ahead for more of Arequipa, the Colca Valley, Nazca, and our drive through the zone affected bythe earthquake...)

We flew from Cuzco to Arequipa today on another gringo filled LAN Peru Airbus A319. We also left Fiona behind in Cuzco with her new 20 year old Peruvian boyfriend (14 years her junior!). She says she will meet us in Lima at the end of our Peruvian tour... we shall see...

Anyway... The flight was terrifying because of the all turbulence!! I was nauseous by the time we arrived in Arequipa. To make matters worse, we had a stop over in Juliaca to pick up more travelers, so we had two high speed take offs and landings (the planes have to land and take off at nearly twice normal velocity in these high-altitude cities).

We arrived in Arequipa around dusk. It was a stunning city surrounded by three volcanos in very close proximity (though apparently only one of them is still active). This was the first city in Peru that felt very clean and modern (most likely because it is the second most important city in the country after Lima). Also, though it was on the "gringo trail" it felt much less touristy than Cuzco and Lake Titicaca.

We had a fantastic dinner tonight at Zig Zag restaurant. Their specialty is stone grilled ostrich. I tried it and it was delicious! (and apparently one of the most healthy red meats you can eat)
