Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

A journal entry from: Southeast Asia

Kuala Lumpur surpassed all our expectations for a city experience.  Like all southeast Asian cities there were crumbling sidewalks waiting to trip you into the sewer and the aromas of sizzling food cooked in hawkers' booths. But in KL, prosperity was evident everywhere - in the looming 88 story Petronas Towers and the ultramodern transportation systems.  Riding the monorail provided easy access to the various shopping areas - Chinatown, Little India and to the National Mosque and the Islamic Arts Museum. We became "citified" - getting hair cuts, new clothes, and even eating a gourmet burger.
