Kota Bharu, Malaysia

A journal entry from: Southeast Asia

This city, in the most northeastern part of Malaysia, is rich in Islamic culture. The women are beautifully dressed in colourful sarongs, tunics and scarves - each one a walking palette of colour and design. This Kelantan state of Malaysia is governed by the Islamic party which has tried for years to impose syariah (Islamic law). You can still see signs of this - separate check-out signs for men and women in supermarkets  and for sitting on public benches (neither abided by). The only evidence of strict conservatism seems to be in the dress code of women. We enjoyed the Kelantan food in the hawker stalls at the night market.(Greg missed the beer in this alcohol free state) The camera card has picked up a virus so we're disappointed with the quantity and quality of our photos....
