Chiang Rai, Thailand

A journal entry from: Southeast Asia

Arrived by bus after an eight hour bus ride in the Golden Triangle area of Thailand to a city called Chiang Rai. (called the Golden Triangle because it borders on Burma and Laos and was famous for it's opium trade).  It's much quieter here and fewer tourists. Last night we went to the night market where the local people go on a Saturday night and there were very few "farangs" there. We had a great dinner choosing from the many vendors and sat and watched traditional Thai dancing and listened to a local folk singer. We visited a cultural museum today and wandered the streets. We need to move on in a few days because our visa is running out.  As we head further north the tourists become those of the more adventurous backpackers. No more tour buses.
