Biking in Barcelona

Written on: Monday May 19th, 2008

A journal entry from: Around the World in 80 Days!

Hey everyone,

Well, we didn´t have a lot of time in Barcelona but we managed to fit in almost everything we wanted to do and see.  We left Nice early on Saturday and had the whole day on the train.  We had a 3 hour stop in Montpellier but spent the majority of the time in the train station.  We finally made it into Barcelona at 10:45pm, an hour late.  We were stopped at the France/Spain border for almost an hour doing something... we had no idea what was going on but no one looked too concerned so we just sat and waited.

We decided to take a bike tour our first day in the city to try and get as much in as possible.  The tour was really fun... sure a lot nicer then walking everywhere as we´ve been doing.  The tour lasted a little over 3 hours and took us around most of the sites in the central area of the city.  We spent the afternoon walking back to a few of the places we wanted to spend more time in and over to the Olympic Park.  We had supper near the Palau National de Montjuic and waited around for the fountain to start up after 9:00pm.  They had the fountain lit up and timed to music that was quite impressive.

Rain was forcasted again this morning (so far we´ve had horrible luck with rain along the Medditareanian) so we spent the day going into the Sangrada Famillia and La Padrera (both by the architect Gaudi).  The interior of the Sangrada Famillia which is still undergoing construction was impressive and will certainly be a sight to see in another 50 or so years once it´s complete.  We sped around on the metro to catch a few more buildings, including the Torre AGBAR, before heading back to the hostel to get ready for our night train to Bilbao.  Hope the train isn't too shady... we're in a shared couchette (cabin with 6 bunkbeds) so we'll see how that goes.

Anyways, we'll try blogging again before leaving Madrid for Prague.  We'll be taking another train to Madrid later in the day tomorrow from Bilbao.  Talk again soon!

PS we added a couple pictures from our last day in Nice and some from Interlaken if you want to check them out!

Wow, Matt and Leslie, What amazing sights you have seen. Too bad your weather has not been great, but it looks like a nice day for riding bikes. Where are your helmets?!! Teehee. It must have been neat to see all the stars at Cannes. Looking forward to hearing about your time in Prague. Thanks for all the great journal entries and photos. Love Jan
