A journal entry from: Around the World in 80 Days!

Our flight from Melbourne to Cairo took us through Dubai and we luckily had a long enough lay-over to get out of the airport for a few hours and see a few of the sights.  We also stopped in Singapore but it was the middle of the night and we were only off the plane for 45 minutes.  Our Emirates flight was okay but not as great as our long haul flight with Qantas.  Another guy had the same seat assignment as I did so we had some moving around to do.

In Dubai we caught a cab around 6:30 in the morning and started our quick run around the city.  Our driver was very nice and took us on the scenic route out to the Burj Al Arab (the sail hotel) and back through the city past the Burj Dubai construction site and down the freeway through 'new Dubai'.  He dropped us off in 'old Dubai' where we wandered through the markets and along the harbour of Dubai creek.  It was still early out so there wasn't as much activity as we expected.

We made our way back to the airport before noon to make sure we didn't miss our plane and to get out of the sun... who'd have thought it would be that hot in the desert!  A quick trip but a better way to spend a few hours than inside an airport terminal.  It would be interesting to go back in a few years once everything is built.
