The Rock Tour

A journal entry from: Around the World in 80 Days!

Day 18 - Alice Springs AUS - Distance travelled: 19,370km

Our weekend at Uluru was a great time.  Spent half of the time driving and the other half hiking.

We got picked up at our hostel around 6AM and made it to our first stop, Kings Canyon, around 2PM.  The hike was about 7 KM but we started off by having to get to the top of the canyon by climbing 'heart attack hill'.  It was 32 degrees but our guide said he's done the tour once when it was 49 so we counted ourselves lucky.  We got a pretty good rest in the middle of our hike when we stopped at the 'garden of eden' and got to go for a swim.  Leslie and I packed light and unfortunatly forgot our swim trunks so we just sat down in the shade.  Our day wrapped up when we got to our bush camp for the night and rolled out our swags.  The stars were fantastic!

Day 2 involved more driving out to the Olga's (another rock formation in the same park as Uluru).  We packed up early and made it to the site by noon.  The 9 KM hike actually seemed a little more difficult than our first day but the views and the stories we were told were worth it.  We ate dinner while watching the sun set over Uluru.  This time we camped in a campground right in the park so we could be up bright and early for our final day.

We woke up early so we could get out to Uluru again to watch the sun rise.  Then we finished our weekend by doing a base walk around Uluru and learning the history and aboriginal stories regarding Uluru and the surrounding park.  Once we made the long trip back to Alice Springs we went out with the tour group and had one of the first real party nights since leaving on our trip.  Had a great time and met a lot of really good people.

We made it to Adelaide safe and sound but we'll write more about that later.
