Room to Read

A journal entry from: NEPAL! (and getting there)

A couple of weeks ago I read a book that Kelly lent us called Leaving Microsoft to Change the World. It was about a man who worked for Microsoft, he went trekking in the Annapurna himalayas (around Pokhara) and got the chance to visit a mountain school. He was saddened by the lack of resources, especially books that the school had. Soon after this experience he left his job at Microsoft and founded a charity that now builds schools and libraries, sponsors girls to go to school and provides books to communities across Nepal, Vietnam, Laos, South Africa and other countries. Room to Read is an amazing organisation working with communities to provide better facilities for education so that the communities feel that they have a part in the projects and therefore have more reason to keep on caring for the facilities.

I'm not the best to explain Room to Read's work. If you want to know more go to their website www.roomtoread.org. I haven't had much chance to look at it but I did have a quick glance. I think it seems to be a really good organisation and worth supporting. I plan to look into it more when I get home. It is also woth reading the book, Leaving Microsoft to Change the World by John Wood. For an unexperienced writer it's amazingly well written and balances a good storyline with interesting information about Nepal (and some of the other countries) and running businesses or charities (all without becoming at all incomprehensible or confusing).
