A journal entry from: NEPAL! (and getting there)
The flight to Kathmandu started in such thick clouds that we though that we wouldn't see any of the Himalayas. However, after a while mountain paks started to peep through the clouds like islands. Then we got some good views of mountains (although hey never look that impressive on the photos.). We stopped in Lhasa (Tibet). They got us all off, took us through a load of security and put us back on the smae plane! At least we got to see a bit of Tibet! They announced as we passed Everest. It was on the other side of the plane (I'm suprised the plane didn't tilt with everyone rushing to one side!). A friendly guy pointed out which one it was (or I'd never have known).
Kathmandu is so different from all the other cities we've been through. My first impression of it was dust, cows and women in saris. It was bustling like China but so different, so much poorer. We saw a monkey in a temple. The taxi dropped Mel and Steve off first (the people picking me up were very laid back about giving them a lift). It was weird being alone after spending two weeks with them. My hotel was in Thamel, the tourist part of Kathmandu. I wondered around it a bit. It was a little overwhelming. It's full of shops and restaurants and people begging and selling. If you don't walk with a purpose you get harrassed by everyone. It was nice to see it but I'm glad I didn't stay longer.
Kelly met me leter. She's the woman who looks after us in Pokhara. She's canadian but live in Nepal so she knows what it like to live and volunteer here. It was great to meet her. she showed me round a bit and suggested some places to eat. After she left I had my first dhaal bhaat which was ncie but the dhaal was a bit spicy.
The hotel arganised the bus for me and walked me there. All I had to do was get up at 6am (again) so I had an early night. the electricity was off anyway.
