Rafting and hot springs!

A journal entry from: Costa Rica 2011

Another day staying in La Fortuna, but this time in a new place.  After meeting a fellow solo traveller, Abby, on my hike, I decided to move to her hostel (called Gringo Pete's), because there were actually people there to meet!  It turned out to be a great decision.  After packing my stuff and schelping it to the complete oppisite side of town, I felt immediately more welcome and energized by having friendly travellers around.

After settling my bags, I was picked up for a rafting trip on the Balsa River.  Abby had planned on going on a river float, but no one else signed up, so the trip did not run.  She decided to come along on the rafting trip. The trip was amazing.  The guides were so much fun, and the rapids were exciting enough for a beginner like me.

We stopped about halfway through our trip for some fresh pineapple and watermelon.  After getting back in our raft, the guide asked if Abby or I wanted to ride on the front for a photo.  I volunteered (I think it was a bit much for Abby, since originally she was hoping for a rapids-free river float).  It was pretty exciting, but one of the guys sitting in front stopped paddling and therefore the raft didn't get to the right spot for the best photo.  He said he stopped because he was afraid I was going to fall off!  When he asked if I was afraid, his friend said "No, she was having a blast!"  And that was true!

After the rafting we stopped at a restaurant for a late lunch of typical Costa Rican food (rice, beans, salad, and fried plantains), which was delicious.  Then it was back to the hostel, but not for long.  Still in my wet clothes, I decided to take a trip to the Baldi hot springs -- a fancy resort with numerous pools of spring water, water slides, and poolside bars.  The whole things was open air, with lots of lush, tropical plants surrounding the pools.  Although it was very touristy, I was still nice, and I was able to relax my muscles after all the rowing I had done earlier!
