Ronda, Spain

A journal entry from: South Africa, Europe 2015

From Granada it was just a short drive to the coast to a place just north of Malaga named Torrox Costa. There we were  hosted by our good friends Marilyn and Wayne Mercer. These fellow British Columbians are spending almost 4 months in Europe hopping, via one week rentals through Portugal, Spain and France. For our stay in Torrox they graciously procured a two bedroom townhouse with a splendid balcony overlooking a beautiful coastline. We spent a fun four days there exploring the white villages in the hills behind and eating (and drinking a little wine) on their lovely deck. On our last day we went for a wonderful dinner and were surprised to find that our chef, Carlos, had spent four days in Vancouver while on his way to dog mushing lessons in the Yukon. We left the overdeveloped coastline hoping to find the real Spain in the Sierra Nevada mountain range behind the coast. And find it we did! Although these mountain dwellers are obviously far more well off than the last time we visited, the little towns and villages remain free of the horrid excesses of the coasts (no Carrefours, Aldis or MacDonalds). We are able to do our shopping in cute little owner operated grocery stores and the produce we are eating is the freshest we have had in Europe. The area is not overrun with northern tourists and the natives remain super friendly. On top of all that this is splendid hiking and biking territory and we have been taking advantage of the warm spring weather to get back in shape and ready for the Compostelle in June.

We enjoyed the 4 days in Torrox Costa as well....hopefully your next blog will include some shots of Ronda....the location of the oldest bullfighting ring in the world and the town was a favourite haunt of Ernest Hemingway & Orson Wells.....
