Nata, Botswana

A journal entry from: South Africa, Europe 2015

After a last few gulps of wine we took the 2 hour plane trip to Johannesburg to catch up with our Intrepid group. As expected we are the old guys as the other 9 travellers are mid twenties to mid thirties, thus the age of our kids. It is an interesting bunch though: Australians, Americans, Canadians and Swiss. Among them are doctors, nurses, architects, engineers ect. in short a very well educated bunch and a delight to travel with. Tenting in this heat is a little challenging but we have been able to upgrade a couple of times to nice hotels and lodges. The first couple of days involved fairly gruelling 10 hour days in the big Intrepid overland truck. Our first stop was the Khama Rhino Sanctuary in Botswana  which provides a safe haven for approximately 40 White Rhinos and 3 Black Rhinos. Here we did our first game drive and were able to see an amazing variety of animals. Next on the tour was a campground near the city of Maun which is one of the world's great ecosystems, the Okavango Delta. This is a huge area of wetland, home to a great diversity of flora and fauna. We managed to see a tiny part of the Delta via a traditional dugout canoe, called a Mokoro, pushed by local polers. This three day, two night expedition involving camping on a remote island, gave us the opportunity to view a wide variety of plant and wildlife and,via our wonderful guides, get to know a little about the lives of the people who inhabit this area. Living as the native fisher people do, for even such a short period of time, made us appreciate the relative luxury of our campground back in town.

The adventure looks awesome. The water lilies photo is a lovely composition - great for a spa :) 'Can't believe we've not yet been home for a week. Last night was in Franschhoek with a luxurious dinner under the stars. Travel safe!
