Montagu, South Africa

A journal entry from: South Africa, Europe 2015

We have done a quiet little loop around part of the Western Cape in the past week or so. We began with what is called the Garden Route that goes along the South coast, then circled back via Route 62 which traverses an arid semi-desert region called the Little Karoo. Quite a contrast! While the weather along the coast was mostly cloudy, cool and a little bit wet the drive back has been through an intense, but quite dry heat.We stayed a couple of days in two different sections of the Garden Route National Park, Wilderness and Storms River Mouth. These are very beautiful coastal, forested areas with well marked hiking trails and stunning views of the Indian ocean. We enjoyed our time there but were happy to get back to the heat of the mountain route back towards Cape Town. Our first stop was a place called Oudtshoorn the self proclaimed ostrich capital of the world. There were indeed ostriches everywhere and we took advantage by touring one of the many ostrich farms and dining on ostrich meat (quite delicious). The drive through the Little Karoo is simply stunning as the road is hemmed in spectacular, steep sided mountains and rugged valleys. We declined to attempt any of the many rugged mountain passes but stuck to the main road that goes through the middle. The last part of the route goes through a wine and fruit growing region. The South Africans have a very pleasant routine for wine tasting. For a nominal charge you generally get to taste around 6 vintages. When you arrive they give you a wine list and you check off the ones you would like to try. Then you sit at a café style table, usually in a gorgeous garden and periodically return back to the tasting room to replenish you glass. Very civilized!

Thinking of you two on your South African adventure. Thanks for 'taking us along' with your blog and photos. Fascinating country. We're enjoying some early spring weather at home.
