A journal entry from: Europe 2014

Still moving at a snail's pace we are slowly inching our way northward. It's a great way to travel, if you have the time. Just making plans day by day, exploring a new area for a few days and then shifting on until we find a another place that we like. The problem is that we are able to find some pretty amazing things while hardly moving at all. After leaving the Pyrenees we got into an area dotted with what are called the called the Châteaux de Vertige and rightly so as these are castles rising up to more than 700 meters of altitude. Built by the Cathar lords they were meant as a defence of the South, ultimately not successful, against the kingdom of France. It's quite a feat to climb to the top of these castles and, if the fierce Transmontaine winds are blowing,  it's also a challenge to remain on top without flying away. Reluctantly we left this part of the far South passing through some pretty stormy weather in the Parc Naturel du Haut Languedoc. This is an area we cycled through years earlier and we couldn't believe the difficulty of the terrain we went through. The VW was huffing and puffing up some pretty impressive hills. Seeking a little more sunshine we ended up the Lac du Salagou which is a dammed lake set in an area of ancient red rock and bright green vineyards. We pedalled our way through this area on our old hybrids wishing all the time they were proper mountain bikes. A little like Colorado but on a much smaller scale. Finally we moved on to St Guilhem-le- Désert rightly named one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France but also impressively overrun with tourists. We were able to get away from it all by hiking into the hills that tower above the town.

LoVeLy! Thanks for the intro to a new area. Amazing the castles could be built back then at that height and to that height. I'm having my first day off in months. The weather here has been too good to believe. Celebrating!
