The Pyrenees Part 1

Written on: Friday July 18th, 2014

A journal entry from: Europe 2014

It's been awhile since our last post but since we have been moving fairly slowly and not covering a lot of ground there has not been a lot to write about. We have spent the last two weeks in the part of France that borders on the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees Mountain chain. Our ultimate goal was to be able to hike in the Pyrenees, however we had to wait a good 10 days for the weather to clear. In the meantime we were able visit our dear friend Violette in the Lot valley town of Puy L'Evêque. At the ripe old age of 92 she is doing well and can still eat me under the table. From there we winded our way, hiking and biking along the way, to the city of Carcassonne which boasts Europe's largest walled old town. There we were able to meet old friends from our teaching days who are spending their summer holidays (still teaching the poor sods) touring around France. From Carcassonne we headed south through Cathar country, an area that saw a lot of heat during the religious wars and is therefore greatly endowed with medieval castles and churches. Finally with a forecast break in the weather we were able head for the mountains. We were able to camp at a fairly high altitude (1500 and up!) which meant that our hiking has been mainly above tree level. With blue skies and glorious sunshine the scenery here is absolutely fantastic! At this time of year with the wildflowers in full bloom and the snow yet unmelted we are treated to a profusion of colours. The deep blue colour of the myriad lakes making a striking contrast to the stark grey of the mountains above them. Waxing a little poetic but it really is beautiful.

Great description & pictures....Carcassonne reminds us of fantastic cassoulet in the La Marquiere restaurant in La Cite...and travelling in Cathar country is enhanced by reading the historical-fiction Languedoc Trilogy (Labyrinthe, Sepulchre & Citadel) by Kate Mosse....for reference, we will be in Portugal for Mar 2015 and Spain for Apr 2015....Hope the rest of your Summer travels are safe & enjoyable....L&H, M&W
