Chemin de Compostelle Part 2

Written on: Friday July 4th, 2014

A journal entry from: Europe 2014

After a short break in Cahors we hit the chemin again passing through the famous Pont Valentré before steeply climbing into our next section of countryside. This is an an area of low hills but because the walk tends to wind through every commune and village of interest the walker finds himself going up and down with tiring consistency. Here we were back on the main trail and so tended to see more fellow hikers than in the Célé valley. As a result we experienced more of the camaraderie we were used to during last year's walk. We met people who will be walking three or four months and others who are just on the trail for a week or so. It's fascinating to sit around a communal dinner table in the evening and listen to one's fellow travellers' stories, generally in French and English depending on the mixture of guests. At night we alternated between gîtes, fairly low cost and spartan accommodations and chambres d'hôtes which are more upscale. On the last night we splurged on a three star hotel with a restaurant gastronomique. A fitting end to this year's walk.
