Biking around Chiang Mai

Written on: Friday January 24th, 2014

A journal entry from: Thailand and Malaysia 2014

We began our trip in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai, a place we visited two years ago and greatly enjoyed. This time the attraction was a 10 day bicycle trip in the countryside surrounding the city. We thought we had planned well for the weather. This time of year is after the fall rains have ended and before the burning season which causes the whole area to be enveloped in a cloud of noxious smoke. It is, however, called the cool season and this year particularly so. While the day time highs have been up to a balmy 27c the thermometer drops at night to a bone chilling 8c or 9c. For people like us, who packed only shorts and light shirts, staying warm in these unheated resorts has proved to be a challenge. The sky was ,however, quite clear and we enjoyed some good views of the mountains surrounding Chiang Mai. Also this is full on rice growing season and we were able to witness its cultivation using both modern and ancient methods. As well the view of the green rice paddies against a blue sky is quite appealing. Our trip was a self guided one through an outfit called Click and Travel. They provide gear and directions and also reserve some pretty nice accommodations in tourist resorts and lodges. Aside from the cold weather we struggled with sore rear ends (mostly on my part) and a bout of Chiang Mai chug along (beware the unwashed fruit). All in all though the people, the food and the scenery have made this a worthwhile little excursion.

Whoa, after Scotland last summer and the french area years ago I guess you can manage the cold but a tad disappointing? The photos are lovely and at least the days warm it sounds like. Nice!
