A journal entry from: Europe 2012

We truly hated to leave La Drôme Provençal. Life was beginning to take on a quiet rhythm there and camping right behind a lavender distillery was close to intoxicating. The VW  however, doesn't like to let the grass grow under it's wheels so we had to move on. We had planned on redoing the canoe trip down the Ardèche river that we did 30 years ago. Things have changed just a bit and now the river is so clogged with canoes that you can almost walk from one to the other. We fled the maddening crowds and within about 30km found ourselves in the heart of the Massif Central in an area that is almost devoid of any humain inhabitation. It's a wildly beautiful area but can be cold and desolate as well. Here it is possible to hike right on the top of the mountains and the views are fabulous. Unfortunately after a couple of days we were chased from the mountains by bad weather (we really are fair weather mountain people). We ended up in the Midi-Pyrenées an area of South West France that we know well from previous bike trips. Now the weather is cool but sunny, perfect for bike riding.
