Die, France

A journal entry from: Europe 2012

The van already has a lot of kilometers on it but we added on quite a few more by driving from Holland to southern France in just 3 days. We were in a hurry to meet up with the Zahnds who are on holiday in Die this week. We tried to stay away from autobahns on the way down and found some beautiful routes. We began with a drive down the best part of the Rhine river. The one filled with castles (and vinyards). Then we took the German wine road followed by the wine road in Alsace. There is so much to do and see there that we have resolved to go back that way at the end of the summer. From Alsace to Die we wound through the Jura mountains. These border Switzerland and the greater Alps but are wonderful to drive through with quaint villages and pretty scenery. We found four of the five Zahnds in Die, Dominique, Etienne, Guillaume, and Matthieu. Pierre is still at school in St Andrews working on his Scottish accent. One of Matthieu's school mates is now raising goats and making cheese while another is a bee keeper (only in France). We were able to visit the cheese making operation and buy some excellent honey. Of course with the Zahnds a hike is obligatoire especially if you want to enjoy their excellent cooking. We had time to do two hikes, one in  torrential rain the other on a beautiful sunny day.

Looks like you are continuing to have a fabulous time! Back in NV the weather remains cold and wet. Your old house sold again and the wisteria has finally won its battle with the fence. ;)
