Baden Baden, Germany

A journal entry from: Europe

It was interesting revisiting the Czech Republic a country we had previously visited in 2000and 2002. The country has progressed enormously and now very nearly resembles its western neighbours, Austria and Germany,  in many ways. Fortunately the prices remain low ,at least outside of Prague, although that too is likly to change when the country enters the Euro zone in 2010. After Olomouc we headed for the Czech wine region found on the southern border with Austria. This area benefits from a mild mico climate and limestone soil that greatly favors wine making. This area we also found was excellent for biking as there are routes and trails eveywhere. In former times the Lednice/Valtice region was the garden of the Hapsburg empire filled with castles and fantastic landscapes.

From this part of the Czech Republic it is a short way to Vienna. Vienna is a city we have been intending to visit many times but have never managed to do so. This time we did, unfortunately for one day only. It would be easy to spend weeks in this lovely city as there are a huge number of historical sights to visit plus a large array of activities to indulge in in the surrounding area. Alas time was pushing us on and we reluctantly left, heading back to the Czech Republic to revisit the beautiful cities of Telc and Czesky Krumolov. This last city has definitely been discovered since our last visit in 2000. The main area has been totally redone, full of tourists and souvenir shops. After an afternoon there we escaped to the country's southern lake district to cycle, swim and eat Czech food. Yesterday we did a 400km run across the middle of Germany and now find ourselves in the spa town of Baden Baden, a town that we know well from past visits.

Hi you two - you sure have had a good run at life and living these past many months!Hard to believe you will be home in just another two weeks! I'm doing o.k.- managing to keep busy which helps. Have had an amazing stretch of weather, which of course is deserved after the not so wonderful spring. Haven't seen much of the kids (yours) so I guess all is well over there. Rhana has wandered over a few times for a little visit and a nibble of Digby's food if possible! See you soon. Barb
