Mombasa Photos

Our train somewhere west of Mombasa.

My bed on the train. Not bad, eh?

Arrival in Mombasa. It was really hot.

The view from my cheap hotel room. You can clearly see the mosque with the very loud loudspeaker. It also not only broadcast the call to prayer but also what seemed like the entire service. At around 4 a.m.

The old part of town.

Also the old part of town.

And again. The funny shaped building is typical Swahili style mosque.

More old town. They're turning this building into shops.

A view of the harbour. Needless to say there are a few less boats than in previous centuries!

This is Fort Jesus, which was built by the Portuguese in 1593. It changed hands at least nine times between then and 1875 when the British took control and turned it into a jail.

Really old portuguese graffiti.

An amazing coffee/tea house in the old town.

Me with spiced Swahili coffee. Very good!

My shawarma. The drink is an inspired mix of mango and lime juice.

And the most expensive restaurant we ate it. It had prices are not much different from Canada, and the food was absolutely worth it.
