A journal entry from: Lira! The town of bicycles

I was in lira in July and alas! The place has more bicycles than cars. It is not a surprise to see woman, in traditional clothes (Busuuti) riding the bicycles. Lira, a predominatly Acholi area borders with the war ravaged Gulu. Due to this, the business is booming as all the business that would have otherwise gone to Gulu, a bigger town, comes there.

But with the peace talks, Lira business boom might be at stake. But, the peasants, especially subsistence farmers, can still remain the food basket for the north. With cassava, maize and beans in abundance, they will feed the homeless for some time to come.
