Penultimate day

Written on: Wednesday August 15th, 2007

A journal entry from: Elective

On Wednesday we went into the hospital for the last time, going on our last ward round and generally just pottering about until mid-morning, when we left. The rest of the day was very easy-going, with both of us spending time gradually packing our bits and pieces, and relaxing in between.

We are leaving Derby early on Friday morning, catching the bus down to Broome, where we'll be picked up by Karen from Happy Tata's so that we can leave our rucksacks there for the day. We fly at 8pm from Broome, travelling with Virgin Blue to Perth, where, upon arrival, we'll get a taxi to our accommodation there and crash for the night. Saturday's plans involve meeting up with Erin and Jason, who live in Perth, for a day of last minute shopping, and sight-seeing around Perth. Our flight from Perth leaves at 1am, Sunday morning, and we are travelling with Singapore Airlines to Singapore, for a 2 hour stopover before getting back on our flight to Heathrow, which is a bottom-numbing 14 hours long. Not looking forward to that, but it will all be worth it when we get there!

On the night, we went for a meal out with Erin and Jason, who leave on Thursday. It seemed that the whole town was eating in restaurants that night, as we struggled to find anywhere that could seat us (the whole 3 restaurants that are here were full!) so ended up in the Boab Inn, which served up expensive and disappointing dishes. Not to worry, though!

When we arrived back at the house, it was time for our going-away party. Duncan and Fraser had stockpiled some wood from their camping trip, so that we could have a party out on the mud-flats. We drove out there, and attempted to get a fire going. It was a feeble effort at first, but soon the fire was blazing away, and we all sat around having some drinks. The stars were out in full force, speckling the dark, velvet blanket of the night sky and looking very impressive.

We stayed for a couple of hours, before heading back to the house for final drinks. Sean the Shark made his final appearance, much to our amusement, and I headed back to bed at around midnight. Thursday doesn't have much in store for us, so we'll be mainly packing and getting excited about coming home! 4 more days - excellent!!
