Meat musings... (warning: might put you off food!)

Written on: Friday June 29th, 2007

A journal entry from: Elective

A common (yet unpleasant) sight on the streets of Nepal is dismembered carcasses of various animals. Up until this point in my life, I think that I have been ignorant to the process that occurs before meat arrives to the supermarket. In fact, I think that I have actively chosen to ignore it! Not so easy here! It is not unusual to look into a shop and see several skinned goat's heads staring back at you, or plucked chickens in a row with their feet and heads still attached. Let me tell you, it's seriously putting me off eating meat.  As a matter of fact, I haven't touched meat for the last few weeks, bar a bit of chicken in the first week and the bone soup incident... There I was, happily eating some soup for lunch, when I was informed that it was made from boiled goat's bones. Cue me forcing myself to swallow a few more mouthfuls to not look rude, and then hastily saying I was full! Urgh!

Anyway, my point is, it's almost enough to make me become a vegetarian, but then I wouldn't want Nando's to go out of business now, would I? ;)

Isn't the psychosomatic nature of food odd, though? Why are some things considered disgusting regardless of their taste? Give me bone soup over fast food anyday... :D xx
