One of the temple gardens at Diatoku-ji

A very famous tea master of old (Sen Rikyu 1521-1594) built a tea house at this temple (Koto-in) at Diatoku-ji. As part of the ceremony, visitors would walk the path in the background to the stone basin and wash their hands, then proceed to the building just visible in the right of the photo. You can just see a small brown square in the wall - this was the door into the tea-room, and you had to crawl in. A delightful interpreter at the temple told me that legend has it this door was designed by the tea master specifically to force a proud Emperor - who had refused to bow to him as tea master when entering his tea room, as protocol dictates - to have no choice but to bow when entering this tea ceremony room.
